Poetry by Heart

Congratulations to the children of Pink Class who received a Highly Commended certificate in the national Poetry by Heart recitation competition.

The competition, which is an annual event, is a poetry celebration for young people aged 7-18 years to choose poems they love, learn them by heart and share them aloud in front of an audience.

Class teacher Racheal Rajah said, “we were allowed to choose our own poem, we were doing a 6 week block of poetry and the students chose ‘On the Ning Nang Nong’ by Spike Milligan – it was their favourite. With current restrictions, it was a video   submission…well I submitted a few clips as it was brilliantly bonkers!”

Pink Class’s entry was warmly praised.  We have copied the judges’ comments here:

Poem: ‘On the Ning Nang Nong’ by Spike Milligan

This was a really enjoyable ensemble performance by the whole class, the teachers and learning assistants and for several of the judges it was one of the Poetry Celebration highlights.  It must have taken a lot of preparation.  We especially liked the way the whole class spoke the poem together using musical instruments to emphasise the poem’s rhythm.  We liked the way that individuals all had their opportunity to share their own expression of parts of the poem.  We think Spike Milligan would have loved this too.

You are rightly proud of your work around pupil wellbeing, and ensuring pupils are ready for learning.  This has enabled you to establish a calm and purposeful learning environment for pupils with considerable needs.
