At Dysart, we recognise that successful outcomes depend on more than academic achievement alone. Alongside subject knowledge and qualifications, every pupil develops the skills needed to communicate effectively, build positive relationships, manage their wellbeing, develop independence and participate meaningfully in their communities.
To support this, we have developed the Dysart Skill Ladders: a whole-school framework that maps the progression of learning and development across the essential skills that underpin lifelong success. These skill ladders provide a shared language for pupils, staff and families, helping us to identify, teach, celebrate and track progress in the areas that matter most for learning, independence and preparation for adulthood.
The Dysart Skill Ladders are embedded throughout the curriculum and are relevant to every pupil, regardless of age, pathway or accreditation route. They ensure that key skills are taught explicitly, practised regularly and applied across different contexts, enabling pupils to transfer their learning beyond the classroom.
Whether a pupil is following an Engagement Pathway, accessing the National Curriculum or working towards accreditation and qualifications, the Dysart Skills framework remains a consistent thread throughout their educational journey. Together, these skills provide the foundation for confidence, resilience, wellbeing, community participation and future success.
The ability to understand, manage and reflect on emotions is essential for learning and wellbeing.
Pupils develop strategies to regulate their emotions, manage change, build resilience and participate successfully in learning and social situations.
Pupils are supported to become increasingly confident and effective learners.
This includes developing attention, memory, problem-solving, critical thinking, creativity and the ability to apply learning across different contexts.
Developing independence is a key priority throughout a pupil’s time at Dysart.
Pupils learn to make choices, solve problems, manage daily routines and take increasing responsibility for themselves and their learning.
Pupils are supported to understand and take responsibility for their physical, emotional and mental wellbeing.
Learning promotes healthy lifestyles, self-awareness, personal safety and positive life choices.
Positive relationships are at the heart of successful learning and participation.
Pupils develop social understanding, collaboration, respect for others and the skills needed to build meaningful relationships within school, at home and in the wider community.
